In case you don’t want to check it out for yourselves, the ad features Serena Williams – “the world’s sexiest tennis player”, facing up against actress Rileah Vanderbilt – “the world’s sexiest tennis gamer”. Both are decked out in the entirely tennis-appropriate uniform of skimpy black outfits and fishnets. There are closeups of various bits of both women as they cavort around, apparently playing Top Spin 4 via PS3 Move.
The video did the rounds earlier this week to very mixed responses, and today 2K Sports are singing an unexpected tune:
“As part of the process for creating marketing campaigns to support our titles, we pursue a variety of creative avenues. This video is not part of the title’s final marketing campaign and its distribution was unauthorised.”
Regardless of whether or not you believe the publisher’s story, this is an interesting little adventure. Games sites around the world erupted, horrified at the blatant sexism featured in the ad. Serena Williams is one of the world’s most elite sportswomen, but even she can’t escape being used for a bit of titillation in the name of advertising.
