Laura Shigihara is a super-cute musician who loves her video games. She has worked on the music and sound effects for more than 20 games, but is probably best known for her contribution to PopCap‘s blockbuster, Plants vs. Zombies.
Recent events in Japan really hit home for Laura, who reports that she still hasn’t been able to contact all of her friends and family who live in the earthquake-affected regions. As a result, she’s decided to do what she can to help, and she’s rallying gamers to support her cause.
From now until Sunday, March 27th, the Plants vs. Zombies soundtrack is on sale for just $3.99 via Laura’s Bandcamp page, and 100% of the proceeds will go to MercyCorps, to aid relief efforts in Japan.
I’m hoping to raise as much as I can to donate to the cause. Right now there are almost half a million people in Japan who have been left homeless in the frigid weather as a result of the earthquake and tsunami. MercyCorps is working with Peace Winds Japan to deliver balloon shelters to accommodate up to 600 people; large emergency tents; clean water, food and blankets for survivors in Japan.
Now, Laura hasn’t said this specifically, but I’d imagine that if you already have the Plants”>PvZ soundtrack and want to pick up some of her other music, proceeds from those purchases would also go towards the donation to MercyCorps.
Laura has also recently recorded a cover of Kyu Sakamoto’s Ue o Muite Aruko (上を向いて歩こう), a haunting tribute about “keeping a smile on your face and hope in your heart even though times are really tough”.
Finally, if you’re not bothered by the music, but still want to donate to a good cause, Laura’s set up a fundraising page that you can use to give money directly to where it’s needed.
Thank-you guys so much… take care and stay safe!
