Tomb Raider to return to the Silver Screen

Two bits of Tomb Raider news in almost as many days? You are a lucky bunch of fans, yes you are! While all eyes are on the upcoming game (due next year, simply titled Tomb Raider), it looks like the films will be getting a revamp as well.

GK Films have announced that it’s chatted to Square Enix, and has now acquired the movie rights to the game franchise.

Graham King is on-board as producer on the project, who explains the next Lara Croft adventure should hit the big screen by 2013, all things going to plan.

“We are very excited to be rebooting what is already a hugely successful film franchise and continuing the Tomb Raider phenomenon.”

Tomb Raider has already been the subject of two box office smash movies, both starring Angelina Jolie as the British treasure hunter Lara Croft. Whether or not Ms. Jolie will return to the role is yet to be seen.

We’re not sure if the new movie will look at Lara’s history like the video game reboot, or if it will take the franchise in a new direction, but either way, it’s probably going to sell an awful lot of tickets.
