If you get in quick and pre-order the limited edition of Battlefield 3, you’ll receive the digital expansion pack for the game – Back to Karkand for free!
It’s a “themed” multiplayer expansion, including four legendary Battlefield 2 maps recreated using the new Frostbite 2 physics, visuals and destruction. They’re also throwing in some classic BF2 weapons and vehicles, a handful of unique rewards, and some bonus achievements and trophies.
The pre-order bonus is while supplies last, so check with your local gaming retailer to find out if they’re offering it – or simply head online to the [surl=http://eastore.ea.com/battlefield3]EA Store[/surl] for your copy.
And finally, we do have some actual details for the game.
As we’d anticipated, you’ll be playing as the elite U.S. Marines – the first boots on the ground at many international conflicts. Battlefield 3 promises “heart-pounding” missions across the world – Paris, Tehran, even New York.
As a U.S. Marine in the field, periods of tension and anticipation are punctuated by moments of complete chaos. As bullets whiz by, as walls crumble, as explosions force players to the ground, the battlefield feels more alive and interactive than ever before.
Battlefield 3 has been a long time coming, and it looks like DICE aren’t about to slack off. The Frostbite 2 engine is responsible for everything in-game, and we hear it’s something pretty shiny. Promising cutting-edge state-of-the-art technology, enhanced visual quality, grand sense of scale, dynamic audio and – of course – massive destruction, we’re in for a fun ride. Character animation uses the ANT technology from recent EA Sports games, too – which is promising.
The game will throw you into a near-future war where international conflicts span land, sea and air – and you’ll be able to explore the heart of the combat through single-player, multiplayer and even co-op modes. Dense city streets require some very different strategies to battling it out in wide-open rural locations!
General Manager at DICE, Karl Magnus Troedsson, explains:
“We are gearing up for a fight and we’re here to win. Where other shooters are treading water, Battlefield 3 innovates. Frostbite 2 is a game-changer for shooter fans. We call it a next-generation engine for current-generation platforms.”
Executive Producer Patrick Bach continues:
“We wanted to create the most immersive and emotionally powerful Battlefield game ever and we needed new technology to deliver on our vision. Battlefield 3 preserves the franchise’s signature sandbox style and even brings back classic fan favourites like jets, going prone and 64-player multiplayer on PC.”
Believe it or not, Battlefield 3 will be ready-to-play before the end of the year, for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The official unveiling will be next week at GDC, which hopefully will signal the end of these “teaser” trailers and give us something we can sink our teeth into.
