It’s been a while since we’ve had a good Kinect hack, but this one’s pretty impressive: A “future vacuum”, created by combining Kinect with a Roomba vacuum cleaner.
Personally, I was hoping to see something a bit more …theatrical. Control the device with a wave of your hand, like a symphony conductor. Instead, Japanese programmer [surl=http://www.youtube.com/user/ogutti]Ogutti[/surl] has gone for a more straight-forward approach.
I always thought the purpose of a Roomba was so that you didn’t have to exert any physical effort, which does kinda make this hack a bit weird. Surely, if you wanted to do the back-and-forth movements of pushing a cleaner around your floor, you’d just get a standard model?
(By the way, the Roomba is hardly a precision piece of technology, so the apparent ‘lag’ in the video is merely the time it takes for the machine to change direction, rather than any problem with the Kinect technology.)
This is [surl=http://www.youtube.com/user/ogutti]Ogutti[/surl]’s most recent project – he’s also spent time creating a [surl=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBGA7ARLzPA]humanoid robot[/surl] with an iPhone for a head. It’s as awesome as it sounds.
