Diablo III still not confirmed for consoles

The internet rumour-mill is churning again over some familiar ground: Diablo III for consoles. A “new” job ad has popped up calling for a “[surl=http://jobs.gamasutra.com/jobseekerx/viewjobrss.asp?cjid=25316&accountno=48212]Senior Producer, Console Diablo III[/surl]”.

We’ve been down this path countless times, most recently last November, when the publisher called for a Lead Programmer, Lead Designer and a Senior Producer for the game – explaining that they were experimenting with a “Diablo-related concept for consoles”. Looks like they might be having some difficulty in filling the roles – the new call-out is for [surl=http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/careers/posting.html?id=10000BD]exactly the same position[/surl] advertised last year.

In case you’d forgotten last year’s statement, the [surl=http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/community/]Diablo community page[/surl] was updated to explain the situation:

We’re exploring a Diablo-related concept for consoles and are currently looking to fill a few senior console-related positions on the Diablo III team. As we’ve said in the past, with proper care the gameplay could suit the console platform, and we’re interested in seeing what talent out there might be interested in such a project. If you’re passionate about all things Diablo and have the requisite skill and experience, then head over to our jobs site to check out the positions and apply.

Please note that this is not an announcement of a console title. We are first and foremost developing Diablo III for Windows and Mac PCs and don’t intend to allow any possibility of a console interpretation to delay or affect the release of the game.

Blizzard have gone on the record countless times saying that they will put a game on console “if it played well on console”, observing that the Diablo franchise would be suited to the task. (The original Diablo was released for the original PlayStation back in 1998, by the way.)

Company CEO Mike Morhaime recently explained that:

I think you could make an argument that a game like Diablo might play very well on a console. It’s something that we’re actually doing an investigation into to see if that could make sense.

…and that’s just what this new job is for – to explore, experiment and investigate whether or not the global hunch is correct. Nothing new to see here folks, keep moving. Maybe stop back around October, we’ll see if anything has developed.
