Hey, StarCraft! Gameloft's RTS looks just like…

Starfront: Collision is an upcoming RTS for iPhone / iPad / iTouch from the “mobile and budget game specialists” at Gameloft. As well as developing cheap handheld games, there’s one other thing that Gameloft are known for – borrowing liberally from other best-selling titles.

While the introduction to the following trailer could have been inspired by any inter-stellar title on the market, you’ll soon start recognising elements around the 35 second mark, and they just get more blatant from that point onward.

Welcome to planet Sinistral, where the rare Xenodium crystals are coveted by a human mining conglomerate: The Consortium. But, they are not the only ones to lust after the rare mineral. The Myriad, an indigenous race of aliens, is addicted to the Xenodium and will do everything they can to prevent the Consortium from plundering their resources. To add to the chaos, a savant robot race called the Wardens wishes will try to turn the war in their favor. Whose side will you rally?

If you’re thinking Terran, Protoss and Zerg right about now, you’re not alone. The game bears a striking resemblance to Blizzard‘s best-selling StarCraft franchise. We’re not sure if Blizzard have caught wind of this young upstart just yet, or what they think of it, but Gameloft are no strangers to controversy.

The company’s head honcho Michel Guillemot has argued against plagiarism allegations in the past:

“The videogame industry has always played around a limited number of themes. There is maybe one new idea a year.

“If a type of game is not available, then you should make it. The damaging thing is if you do a bad expression of a good idea.”

Of course the other argument is that Blizzard haven’t brought the real StarCraft to mobile devices just yet, so maybe Starfront: Collision is just filling a niche in the market…

Starfront: Collision

You do look awfully familiar...

You can find out for yourself when the game launches on the App Store on February 10th.
