Casual games are like the scourge, they grow and mutate and take over everything they can get their sticky little addictive tendrils into. Today’s example: Plants vs. Zombies.
PopCap‘s interpretation of the classic tower defense game has already popped up on Windows, PC, iPhone and Xbox 360 – and today it arrives on the Nintendo DS as well, in North America.
Of course, two screens means the game’s been tweaked to take over both of them, as well as utilising the stylus, and a new ad-hoc wireless battlemode’s also been implemented.
…and just like those other alternate versions, it’s brought a few new bits and pieces to the party, including 14 new achievements! In addition to the standard adventure, puzzle and survival modes we know and love from the PC game, there’s also four new ones:
- Air Raid: As a pilot flying repeater, players have to dodge, weave and shoot their way to victory in this side-scrolling shooter-style mini-game
- Home Run Derby: In a wacky marriage of zombies and baseball, players hit home runs to score sun. But they’ll have to watch out for the oncoming, sporty hordes of some all-new zombies.
- Heat Wave: It’s a real scorcher! Players have only a few plants and they tire out quickly. Swap them around with the stylus and cheer them up with the microphone!
- BOMB All Together: Players will blast zombies into the hereafter, but they’ll have to use their plants wisely; there’s a limited supply.
If you don’t want to buy a cartridge, there’s also a DSiWare of Plants vs. Zombies coming “in the next several weeks” – if you can manage to hold out that long, there’s yet another new gameplay mode thrown in, the intriguing-sounding Zombie Trap.
