Portal 2 brings Steam to PS3 (No, really.)

Valve aren’t really known for keeping promises to gamers. The mere mention of Half-Life 2: Episode Three will cause fans to froth at the mouth in frustration.

But! It seems that Gabe Newell along with his friends and colleagues, may be turning over a new leaf.

Portal 2 - doing the unthinkable.

I’ll let the co-founder and president of Valve explain a bit:

“We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product.

“Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases.”

What he’s referring to is the debut of Steam functioning on any next generation console. The new services will be bundled up with the PS3 version of Portal 2, including persistent cloud-based storage of PS3 saved games, as well as cross-platform play and chat (PC/Mac vs. PS3) for multiplayer games,

…and if that wasn’t enough, if you buy Portal 2 for the PS3, you’ll unlock a Steam Play copy of the game for PC and Mac, just by linking your PSN and Steam accounts.

Josh Weier is the project lead on Portal 2 at Valve, and he can explain things better than I can:

“We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers.

“PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites.”

So – which platform/s will you be grabbing Portal 2 for when it launches this April? PS3, PC, Mac or Xbox 360?
