If you’re a retro game fan, chances are you’re also a fan of new and innovative ways of playing your old favourites. Enter Sarien.
It’s a website designed specifically for the iPad web browser that will give you access to, oh, pretty much the entire old-school Sierra point-and-click adventure library – including the classic Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards!
The site’s creator, Martin Kool, tried his hand at porting an abridged version of the classic Space Quest to iPad, as a demo. Then, he worked on the whole game, and other titles were quick to follow, many of them with tweaks and adjustments to make them work more happily with the screen resolution and touch interface. (He’s currently working on iPhone support, by the way.)
The library’s now up – and freely available – and Kool’s gone one step further for fans. He’s hosting the site via Amazon‘s content distribution network, so the games load almost as quickly as if they were running directly on your device, rather than in the cloud.
So – how do you get there?
Grab your iPad, head to ipad.sarien.net, select the game you want to play (and add a Home Screen icon for it), and you’re off.
King’s Quest: Quest for the Crown
King’s Quest II: Romancing the Throne
King’s Quest III: To Heir is Human
Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards
Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Angel
Space Quest I: The Sarien Encounter
Space Quest II: Vohaul’s Revenge
The Black Cauldron
Of course, because these are hosted in the cloud and there are no downloadable components, you do need to be online while you’re playing. If you’ve got a hefty data allowance, you’ll be fine, but if you don’t, this might be one best left for wi-fi experimenting.
