The Devil May Cry series started out as a console exclusive, with the first two instalments released solely for the PS2. Then Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening was ported to Windows, and that opened the floodgates. Devil May Cry 4 was even released on the Xbox 360 as well as PC and PS3, and we’ve now learned it’s about to re-surface in an all-new version, as Capcom put the finishing touches on Devil May Cry 4: Refrain, for iPhone.
Predictably, it’s not an exact copy, the iPhone version being simplified significantly when compared to the console outing, but it’s still looking pretty nifty.
One thing that has carried over is the storyline. You play as Nero (of course – although there are rumours that Dante may be added later as an update), navigating through ten levels and using the touch screen to execute moves with his guns, sword and arm. Want guns and sword combined into one attack button? You got it.
The combo-driven gameplay that we so loved on the console has been adapted for the new version, with Nero absorbing red orbs from each enemy he dispatches – collecting these will allow you to unlock new attacks.
This isn’t the first time Capcom have tried to strip back a best-seller to make it suitable for a mobile device (let’s not talk about Street Fighter IV), but it’s good to see them making another attempt. Devil May Cry 4: Refrain will be released by the end of January, and SlideToPlay have a video of the game in action.
