Mr. Wiebe will be the guest of honor at the grand re-opening of Chicago’s Logan Hardware on January 15th, 2011. Rather than just waving at children and cutting a ribbon, he’s there to do what he does best – play vintage arcade games. The store boasts a vintage arcade room, and who better to try it all out? Throughout the day, Wiebe will be attempting to break his own Donkey Kong high score – and world record – by achieving something greater than 1,064,500.
But he’s not the only one to have fun on the 15th! All games in the vintage room collection will be free to play for all paying Logan Hardware customers (during regular business hours). You’ll be able to get your game on with a selection of titles from gaming’s golden age – Asteroids, Berzerk, Burgertime, Centipede, Frogger, Missile Command, Moon Patrol, Pac Man, Ms. Pacman, Tron, Gauntlet, Track and Field, Mario Brothers, Joust, Tempest and Zaxxon – as well as various pinball machines and, of course, Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr.
…and it gets even better. If you ever wanted to learn how to play Donkey Kong like a pro, Steve will teach you. He’s running a class – DK101 – that will teach you tips and tricks that might even have you challenging his score!
(There are limited places available for the class – if you want to take part, it’ll set you back US$12 and you have to register online for a ticket.)
The day’s plans include three world record attempts (at 3:30, 5:30 and 7:30), with the DK101 class held earlier, at 2pm. If you attend, you might even get your picture taken with the true King of Kong!
Ah, if only I didn’t live on the other side of the world. Anyone want to go in my place?
