Razer unveils Anansi MMO keyboard

With my ears still ringing post-BlizzCon, it only seems fitting that Razer chose today to announce the Anansi – the “World’s first MMO gaming keyboard”.

Promising an “unprecedented slew of MMO functions and features”, the keyboard includes dedicated thumb modifier keys and some pretty impressive macro functionalities.

Robert “RazerGuy” Krakoff, president of Razer USA is a bit pleased:

“The Razer Anansi gaming keyboard is the new weapon of choice for MMO gamers.

“Let’s face it, the regular keyboard that came with your PC was designed and built for typing, not for MMO gaming. With its revolutionary seven thumb modifier keys, every key combination that you had before is now multiplied by seven times. The Razer Anansi allows you to use every spell, ability or custom macro in your arsenal — both instantly and in complete comfort.”

(We’re not sure if this means the Anansi will be terrible for doing a bit of actual typing – the typeface chosen is unusual and the height of the keys looks awkward – but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out!)

Standard keyboards offer 12 ability keys – thanks to the function keys located below the spacebar, the Anansi boasts more than seven times that, as well as 100+ fully programmable keys, five additional gaming keys, on-the-fly macro recording and the ability to customise key backlighting (make your choise from over 16 million colours!).

If this is all sounding a little complex to you – you’re not alone. The keyboard is designed to be used with the 12-button “mouse keypad” of the Razer Naga and Razer Naga Epic MMO gaming mice – I remember when just two buttons was a big deal!

Still, if you’re after a “supreme level” of battle control (and ergonomic comfort) when raiding, this might be something worth checking out.
