Black Ops crosses the third dimension

So we all know that Call of Duty: Black Ops will have zombies, but now we’ve also found out that they’ll be extra-scary, as the game will be playable in stereoscopic 3D.

You’ll need a 3D-ready HDTV or PC, and a pair of “state-of-the-art” active shutter 3D glasses… but then you’ll get true depth of field and a whole lotta immersion – exactly what you want from the Call of Duty action franchise. (Of course, if you don’t have 3D capabilities, the game is perfectly playable in standard 2D.)

Mark Lamia, Treyarch Studio Head, explains that:

“Development of stereoscopic 3D began as an R&D project, but once we saw what the technology brought to the Call of Duty experience, what a great fit and how immersive it was, we knew that we had to develop it for Black Ops. Aiming down the sights of your weapons, flying in helicopters, rappelling down mountains, and moving through highly detailed environments are just some of the awesome experiences you will have in 3D with Black Ops.

“We made sure the experience is seamless for gamers to use with a simple menu option to enable stereoscopic 3D or disable it at any time whether playing in the single player campaign, multiplayer or Zombies.”

So – the technical stuff: Call of Duty: Black Ops for PC will be NVIDIA 3D Vision-Ready (and you’ll need an NVIDIA GeForce GPU for the full experience – head to for more information). The console version requires a compatible 3D-ready HD TV. All versions require active-shutter 3D Vision glasses, so you’ll look like a rap star while you’re shootin’ baddies. Bonus!
