Late Friday night is the best time to announce new projects. Just ask Aussie developers Nnooo, who have just informed me that they’re working on not one but two augmented reality titles for the DSi.
Spirit Hunters Inc: Shadow and Spirit Hunters Inc: Light see gamers working for Spirit Hunters Inc, a “mysterious company” who specialise in detecting ghostly spirits, then capturing and trading them. You’re given abilities based on six elements to help you nab these ghostly types – Ice, Water, Fire, Shadow, Light and …Fungus. (Each element has its own strengths and weaknesses, y’know – and apparently one or two aren’t fond of mushrooms.)
And, in case you were wondering, all of this happens right where you’re standing.
Nnooo‘s Creative Director, Nic Watt, explains:
“Spirit Hunters Inc. is essentially a Role Playing Game set in the real world.
Players use the camera built into their devices to hunt out and battle spirits anywhere in the world. Whether it at the supermarket, shopping mall, home or even on holiday. Spirits are hiding all around us!”
“As a member of Spirit Hunters Inc, the player must try to track down as many different types of spirit as possible, challenge them in battle and then either defeat them for experience or capture them for credits.”
As if catching the lot wasn’t a good enough goal, gamers are also given the ability to trade their captured spirits, via email, local ad-hoc communications or even Facebook. You can also create unique challenges and offer rare spirits to each other – helping share the wealth!
Both versions of Spirit Hunters Inc. are due for release later this year on “Nintendo DSiWare and future Nintendo portable devices”. Curiouser and curiouser.
