Blizzard aren’t holding back with the big announcements today – it’s just been confirmed that World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has entered the Family and Friends alpha-testing phase. The official site is now letting eligible gamers copy their characters over to the Alpha servers and start exploring the new-look Azeroth.
Blue poster Zarhym, in a rare (brief) moment of honesty, has revealed that yes, there are people who are playing the next WoW expansion, and – chances are – you’re not one of them.
Yes, we can confirm that the Family & Friends phase of the testing process for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has begun. The closed beta test phase has not yet started, but we will provide updated information when it does.
I’m not sure what has surprised gamers more – the actual news contained within Zarhym’s post, or the fact that it was posted at all!
Unfortunately, the news heralds one more major event: a new influx of scammers, phishing attempts and general nefarious behaviour as gamers salivate at the concept of a new release. A general rule of thumb is, of course, not to give your username or password to anybody. On top of that, please remember that unless you personally have a friend or family member who works for Blizzard Entertainment, your chances of being invited on this particular beta are awfully slim. Your turn will come soon enough, and we’ll make sure we let you know when that is.
