StarCraft II Collectors' Edition is out of this world

It’s getting close now, and Blizzard don’t want you to forget for a second that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is kind of a big deal. Today they’ve revealed plans for a stellar Collector’s Edition, packed with a flash drive, copy of the soundtrack, behind-the-scenes DVD, an exclusive art book and more.

So – what do you get?

The Art of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, a 176-page book featuring artwork from the game

An exclusive 2GB USB flash drive replica of Jim Raynor’s dog tag, which comes preloaded with the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion set

A behind-the-scenes DVD containing over an hour of developer interviews, cinematics with director’s commentary, and more

The official StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty soundtrack CD, containing 14 epic tracks from the game along with exclusive bonus tracks

StarCraft comic book issue #0, a prequel to the comic series

A World of Warcraft mini Thor in-game pet that can be applied to all World of Warcraft characters on a single Battle.net account

Exclusive Battle.net downloadable content, including special portraits for your Battle.net profile, decals to customize your units in-game, and a visually unique version of the terran Thor unit

Pretty nifty, huh? (I especially like the way they assume everybody plays WoW…)

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Standard Edition

Standard Edition packaging

If you’re not into all these bells and whistles, the game will be available as a standard edition – but why not fork out the few extra bucks to pick up all this bonus stuff! Sure, you’ll still be able to play online for no additional fee (thanks, Battle.net!), but you won’t have cool things to look at – where’s the fun in that?

Released sometime in the not-too-distant future for both Windows (XP / Vista / 7) and Macintosh, the standard edition will be available in retail stores and also in a downloadable version, with a recommended retail price of $99.95 AUD / $129.95 NZD / $59.99 USD for both. The collectors’ version is understandably a bit more pricey and is only available in retail stores, where it has a suggested price tag of $149.95 AUD/ $199.95 NZD / $99.99 USD. (Given current exchange rates, that’s somewhat ridiculous, but that’s what we get for living in this wide brown land…)

Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment thinks he’s onto a good thing:

“We’ve been looking forward to revisiting the StarCraft universe with our players for over 10 years, and we wanted to offer an epic collector’s edition that commemorated the occasion.

This special version of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty — easily our biggest collector’s edition to date — does just that, and we think StarCraft II gamers will really enjoy all of the exclusive contents.”

As we all know, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the sequel to the 1998 smash hit, StarCraft – generally considered to be one of the best real-time strategy games of all time. It’s finally time to revisit the protoss, terrans and zerg, with some favourite units making a return alongside a bunch of upgraded and brand-new bits and pieces too.

Picking up where everything left off in StarCraft: Brood War, the new game will follow the exploits and adventures of marshal-turned-rebel-leader Jim Raynor, as he interacts with new heroes as well as some familiar faces. The 29-mission campaign is able to be tailored to each gamer’s preference – a sort of “choose your own mission” path, plus optional technology and research upgrades designed to suit your style.

More details are arriving nearly every week, so keep an eye out (we hear a release date announcement is just over the horizon) – and don’t forget to check whether your preferred gaming emporium will allow you to pre-order your collectors’ edition so you don’t miss out!
