San Diego Comic-Con is, for many pop culture fans, the highlight of the year. But it's not all fun and games - reports have surfaced about sexual harassment, assault and inappropriate conduct, and one cosplayer was left in hospital as police hunt for answers.
UPDATE, August 1: A new police report concludes that the girl was likely not the victim of an assault - instead, her injuries are consistent with those sustained following a significant fall.
UPDATE: A press release from the San Diego Unified Port District Harbor Police explains that a man has been arrested in connection to this case:
ORIGINAL STORY: A 17-year old girl dressed as a female Roger Rabbit for the weekend's event, had a disagreement with friends on Saturday and ran off. Later, she was found on the side of the road, unconscious and bloody, and with no ID.
Harbor Police arrested a 29-year-old man early Sunday morning, July 27th in a hotel at 333 West Harbor Drive. He was booked into San Diego County Jail at 11:20 am on charges of sexual contact with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of minor. The victim, a juvenile female, was transported to a hospital for evaluation and treatment. The Harbor Police Investigations Unit is handling the incident. This investigation is ongoing.
The girl's mother posted a public plea for help via a friend's tumblr:
I just received a call from the San Diego Police Department and my daughter [Name Redacted] was found on the side of the road covered in blood with no ID unconscious. They are unsure what happened to her. My husband is on his way to the police station and then the hospital. If you have any information on what happened to her please send me a facebook message or call me at [Redacted]. Thank you in advance.
The girl is now awake, but has no recollection of the event that caused her injuries. The cosplay community is calling for anyone who saw the girl on Saturday, particularly those who took photos or video, who can help piece together what happened to the cosplayer.
If you do know anything, rather than contacting the victim's mother directly, please contact the San Diego Police Department at (619) 531-2000 or (858) 484-3154 - the case is being handled by the Port of San Diego Harbor Police Department.
I like video games and music and cups of tea and noodles and beagles and colour-cycling LEDs.
