Blizzard registers trademark for Overwatch

Blizzard has let slip a teeny detail about just what it might be working on. A new trademark registration suggests that there's more going on at the studio than just the games we know about, and all the signs point to this being a very interesting development indeed.

Yeah, we know it's not much...

Overwatch has been registered with the USPTO for not only games, but also the usual accompaniments of mousepads, keyboards and other peripherals.

The word itself is almost causing more excitement than the fact Blizzard's working on something new. Not to put too fine a point on it, but Overwatch has a decidedly military feel.

Specifically, overwatch is when one military vehicle or small unit takes a position where it can observe the terrain ahead, as well as providing covering fire for other friendly units. It's also the name of the self-regulating administration in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. To put it another way: Something kinda different to Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo.

Blizzard fans have been stung by false trademark registrations in the past, but Overwatch seems to hold water. There are a couple of big-name people at Blizzard working on unknown titles who seem oddly suited to a military-ish strategy-ish outing (possibly even a shooter?).

First off: Jay Wilson, former game director of Diablo III, moved from that game to a different team earlier this year. His background? Strategy games, through and through.

Possibly more interesting though: Mike Booth, former CEO of Left 4 Dead developer Turtle Rock, who joined the Blizzard family last year. With his experience in Counter-Strike and other shooters, he could bring a very different feel to the studio.

In fact, Booth in December commented that he was working on a small-team project (like Hearthstone, created by 15 developers), but couldn't say any more. It's already been confirmed that Booth's project is not Project Titan, with that MMO project currently on the back-burner.

The company's career page lists an "unannounced game title", currently hiring people who want to join "a small but mighty band of developers" to make "the next generation of truly kick ass weapons".

We'll leave it at that, and look forward to this year's BlizzCon.
