Nintendo announces record-breaking 2013

Nintendo has celebrated a record-breaking year of handhelds, reporting that more than 16 million 3DS games were sold in 2013 - around 5 million more than were sold in 2012, bringing the worldwide lifetime total to more than 122 million.

There were seven games released for the 3DS in 2013 that received a Metacritic score of 85 or more. Two of them - Fire Emblem Awakening and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - were granted a score greater than 90.

Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing explains the show's not over:

Nintendo 3DS is a powerhouse with games and experiences that appeal to all kinds of players. We’re not slowing down in 2014. With more games featuring fan-favorite franchises on the way, the best days of Nintendo 3DS are still to come.

It's a big call - there are already nearly 35 million consoles from the 3DS family (including 3DS XL and 2DS) around the world, with 11.5 million in the United States alone. Has Nintendo reached saturation point?
