Subscribers to BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic have now gained access to an early access version of the Galactic Starfighter expansion, which -- oddly enough -- adds the ability for players to acquire fighter ships and duke it out in space. Nice.
According to the SW:ToR blog, Galactic Starfighter is a "12v12 PvP free flight space shooter" which seeks to emulate the exciting, fast-paced space-combat of the Star Wars movies. It includes a variety of different play styles (with Scout, Strike Fighter and Gunship varieties) and the ability to upgrade and customise your fighter ship.
The initial early access launch includes two battle zones, one game mode and fourteen Starfighters as a taste of what's to come -- the full launch in February will include a new type of ship (the Bomber) as well as a total of 24 ships and a new Flashpoint to link the content to the game story.
While paid subscribers have access now, Preferred Status Players (previous subscribers or those who've purchased something in the game) gain access to SW:TOR Galactic Starfighter on January 14, and everyone else will gain access a little later on February 4.
