Xbox One day one patch available early

If you're looking forward to actually playing games on your Xbox One, Microsoft is offering a nifty way for you to get a head start. Rather than waiting for your console to download the 2GB recommended Day One patch, you can grab it right now and pop it on a USB key all ready to install on the new hardware.

Technically intended for gamers who are having trouble getting their console online, there's nothing stopping you from taking advantage of the system.

There's a trick to it: You'll need to know which OS version your Xbox One is running - there are two options at this point, so you could theoretically just grab the updates for both.

Once you've got that information, you need to download the update to a flash drive (with at least 2GB of space, and formatted as NTFS).

Fast-forward to tonight, when your Xbox One is sitting happily in your loungeroom. Find out which OS you are running, and then follow these steps to install the appropriate software.

  1. Unplug the network cable if you’re using a wired network connection.
  2. Power off your console, and then unplug the power cord to ensure that the console is completely powered off.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back in.
  5. Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox One console.
  6. Press and hold the BIND and EJECT buttons, and then press Power On.
  7. Continue holding the BIND and EJECT buttons for 10-15 seconds.
  8. Listen for two “power-up” tones a couple of seconds apart.
Note If you don't hear two power-up tones after 10 seconds, it means this failed. Likewise, if you hear any “power-down” chirps, that also means this failed.
  9. You can release the BIND and EJECTbuttons after the second power-up tone.
  10. When the console restarts, remove the USB drive.
  11. Once the console restarts, the update is complete and you should be returned to your experience.

...you are warned that the console restart "may take several minutes", so don't stress if it doesn't come back straight away.

This Day One patch is required before you can start using your console. If you don't want to mess around with USB keys and early downloads, you'll be able to grab it the first time your Xbox One is connected to the internet.
