SimCity: Mac launch plagued by disasters, too

It's no secret that the Windows launch of SimCity was a fairly spectacular fail - and now, it seems the Mac launch of the game is following suit.

The Mac version of SimCity launched today (after some delay), to quiet fanfare. Mac gamers who had waited patiently for nearly six months were finally ready to enjoy the game - but many of them quickly found they couldn't even install it, much less play.

The official EA forums are swarming with unhappy Mac gamers who are struggling with the game. It's not a case of older hardware or incompatible devices, either - people with brand new MacBooks are having trouble right alongside years-old machines.

We've seen reports decribing the game as "a disaster" and "totally unplayable", and others complaining that EA's Origin software is buggy, forcing at least one gamer to download and install it multiple times before it worked.

Even fans who are able to play the game are unable to run it in full-screen mode as the software keeps defaulting to a small window.

EA has responded to some of the complaints, issuing a new version of Origin, and a spokesperson has attempted to reassure fans still facing problems:

There are a small number of players who have encountered issues with SimCity for Mac. Our live team is working individually with our players to resolve their issues and get them into the game as quickly as possible.

...and, for what it's worth, some gamers are still having positive experiences - so hey, if you're a Mac user and looking forward to a bit of SimCity this weekend, why not try it? If you've already bought it for PC, then the Mac version is free... just be warned, it might not work as advertised.
