Australia / NZ miss out on Kinect voice controls

Part of the reason for the Xbox One price point is due to the inclusion of Kinect 2.0. We're promised the peripheral is a "crucial" part of the Xbox One experience... but many gamers around the world will miss out on major features, as we learn voice commands will only launch in a handful of selected territories. While the US and UK will be able to talk to Kinect, Australia and New Zealand will remain silent.

Xbox One

The device in question

The Xbox One product page has been unceremoniously updated with the following footnote:

Xbox voice commands will not be available in all markets on the product release date. Voice commands will be available at launch in US, UK, CA, FR and DE.

That is, the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France and Germany. Five territories, out of 13 launch regions. Australia, Austria, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain and New Zealand all miss out. It's obviously not a language thing... are our accents really that bad?

The situation echoes the launch of the original Kinect. Launched in Australia in November 2010, voice commands weren't added for more than a year - here's hoping we're not waiting so long this time around.

Xbox One is expected to launch in November (perhaps on the 5th?), costing Aussies AU$599 for a console, one controller and the new Kinect peripheral.

  1. Jonathon Daily says:

Microsoft considers us not important, they must consider us as idiots if they think we’re going to be dumb enough to pay $600 for an Xbox One with a useless camera that does f**kall.

    Screw ‘em I say!

I’ll buy a PS4, Big W still has some in stock I hear for 2013.
