Saints Row IV censored, cleared for AU release

With delicious fanfare, the modified version of Saints Row IV has been approved for Australian release, granted an MA15+ rating by the Classification Board. The game will now be on Australian shelves at the same time as the rest of the world, with gamers over the age of 15 legally able to pick it up.

The news comes after the original game was refused classification not once but twice, with the Board citing in-game drug use and sexual content as being inappropriate for Australian audiences.

The modification is more subtle than many were fearing: Developers at Volition simply snipped one short optional mission out of the game, as explained in a statement by publisher Deep Silver:

Deep Silver and AIE are pleased to report that the Australian Classification Board has now approved Saints Row IV for sale. They have granted the game an MA15+ rating. To achieve this rating one loyalty mission featuring the character Shaundi has been removed. This mission has been widely reported on and contains the use of alien narcotics to obtain certain superpowers.

This mission represents approximately 20 minutes of gameplay out of the hours available to purchasers.

The removal of this mission has no negative impact on the story or the superpowers and will not detract from the enjoyment players will get from their Saints Row IV experience.

The Board's original decision also mentioned an inappropriate weapon - the alien device known as the Rectifier Probe, which is inserted into enemies as a way of extracting information. This weapon is not included in the retail version of Saints Row IV, either in Australia or around the world.

Instead, the Rectifier Probe is due for international release as part of the Season Pass DLC package - that is, it will be headed Down Under with the rest of the game.

Deep Silver stands by this decision and thanks the Australian Classification Board for their assistance with this matter.

Saints Row IV tells the story of the Third Street Saints at the highest level - the leaders of the free world. Problem is, that free world is under alien attack, and it's up to you to save it, Saints-style.

Saints Row IV will be available in Australia, and around the world, from August 22nd for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
