Step back in time with Batman: Arkham Origins

Back in January, Warner Bros. registered a whole pile of domains, leading many to speculate the next Batman title was among them. Turns out, we were right: Batman: Arkham Origins, one of the 15 names considered, has been announced, and will be arriving on the usual platforms in late October 2013.

It's not Rocksteady Games at the helm for this one though, with the Arkham City developer giving its blessing to new studio WB Games Montréal.

Reid Schneider, Vice President and Executive Producer, WB Games Montréal explains:

WB Games Montréal is honoured to have the opportunity to create Batman: Arkham Origins, a new chapter in this amazing franchise. We are huge fans of the franchise and are committed to creating an experience that offers players more of what they love, as well as the chance to play as a younger Batman within a fresh storyline and expanded world.

As you may have suspected by the title, Arkham Origins is a prequel storyline, set several years before both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. Specifically, it's before those pesky criminal-types took over Gotham City. You play as a "young and unrefined Batman", pre-Dark Knight, facing a defining moment in his early career.

...but that's not all. While Batman: Arkham Origins is headed to Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is a nifty standalone release, exclusively for 3DS and PlayStation Vita. It launches on the same day.
