In his latest "blofg" post, Garry's Mod creator Garry Newman has revealed that while he's never been recognised in public, his sandbox Source project has earned him a decent pile of cash over the past 7 years.
It's not all beer and skittles for Newman, though, who writes:
Over 7 years GMod has made about 22 million dollars.
We get less than half of that though. Then the tax man gets a bunch of that. Then when we take money out of the company the tax man gets a bunch of that too.
Back in 2004, Garry's Mod was originally created using a modified version of Valve's Source engine. In 2006, the project hit Steam and started gaining popularity - and courting controversy. Garry himself created a fun way to catch pirates, cheekily revealing users' 64bit Steam ID in an error message that only appeared on illegal copies of the game.
Not long after that, the game clocked up 1 million sales, and that number's doubled in the two years since.
We're now up to version 13 (released in October last year), but Newman is already looking to the future.
Hopefully we're gonna get the Linux version out. Then hopefully we'll move to SteamPipe, and I'll get the NextBot stuff hooked up.. then I want to do another Gamemode Contest.
Newman also promises "a bunch of gamemode creating tutorials" before any of that hits our screens.
I like video games, fishing, Depeche Mode, long walks on the beach, writing discussion papers and cups of tea. Not necessarily in that order.
