EA backpedals on microtransaction comments

Last week, EA made headlines with the statement that "all future games" would contain microtransactions. Following more than a little consumer backlash, the company's now trying to explain exactly what it meant.

Apparently, CFO Blake Jorgensen mis-spoke - microtransactions will be added to all future mobile games.

The original statements were made at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. Now, Jorgensen has taken the stage at the Wedbush Securities Transformational Technologies Management Access Conference, in an effort to set the record straight.

I made a statement in the conference along the lines of, 'we'll have microtransactions in our games'. The community read that to be 'all games'. And that's really not true.

The original statement was "We're building into all of our games the ability to pay for things along the way," by the way.

Today's presentation saw Jorgensen admitting that, due to EA's (and the industry's) free-to-play focus, all mobile games are likely to feature microtransactions. This follows the lead of Australian-developed, EA-published mobile release Real Racing 3.

But don't think that console and PC gamers are getting away from this one. Jorgensen explains the company will be focussing on extensions - so we'd better get used to the Battlefield 3 Premium business model: Batched expansion DLC, plus a handful of perks.
