Think E3 is easy?
Watch here on E3 week and see how much exercise I do.
It's been a big year for Gabe Newell - and it's not even March yet. The Valve co-founder has been inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame, and has just been named by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) as the 2013 recipient of the Academy Fellowship.
This is the highest accolade bestowed upon an individual, given to Newell in recognition of three decades of outstanding and exceptional contributions to gaming. He follows in the footsteps of other games Fellows, including Shigeru Miyamoto, Will Wright and Peter Molyneux.
Newell says:
It is an honor for myself and everyone at Valve to be presented such an award by one of the world’s most respected and recognized organizations. Valve owes a tremendous thanks to many in the UK – to those who have played our games, to the great support of the UK press, and to UK-based creative contributors such as Garry Newman. I look forward to accepting this prestigious honor on behalf of everyone in our community.
Garry Newman is the creator of Garry's Mod, a sandbox title built on Valve's Source engine. The Academy acknowledges the publisher's support of community developers (or "modders", as we are helpfully told), with Steam and Steam Workshop representing an internationally leading marketplace for independent games and in-game items.
Harvey Elliott, chair of the BAFTA Games Committee, explains:
Gabe's contribution to the industry is unique, and he is very different to many others that BAFTA could recognize. As well as enjoying great critical and commercial success with phenomenally popular franchises such as Portal and Half-Life, his work in giving back to the games industry through developing and showcasing other games makers has been outstanding. He is an inspirational developer and truly deserving of our Fellow recognition.
The BAFTA Games Awards will be held on Tuesday March 5th at the London Hilton, streamed online via Twitch.
I like video games, fishing, Depeche Mode, long walks on the beach, writing discussion papers and cups of tea. Not necessarily in that order.
@PlayerAttack Way to go Gabe! @intoxic4ted_
