Spartacus Legends given R rating in Australia

Australia's second R-rated video game has been revealed - and just like the first, it's a little bit unusual. The land Down Under has now been given its first free-to-play adults-only title, released only on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network - and it's a television series tie-in, to boot.

Spartacus Legends, the arena combat release from Ubisoft, has picked up the adults-only rating thanks to - what else - high impact violence.

The game itself features all the gladiatorial excitement of the Starz tv series, giving gamers the opportunity to follow a fighter's journey from early training right up to the "raw, visceral combat" of the arena. Two men enter, one man leaves - will it be you?

We first saw the game back in July, and since then, Ubisoft has announced that it will be using its free-to-play model for Spartacus Legends. This means any gamer (over the age of 18) can jump straight into the fighting action, either online or offline. There's a whole lot of equipment and tools on offer for you to buy in-game, but this gear is graded by fame. If you want the best stuff, you have to be the best fighter. (This bracketing system also means you won't be put up against gamers much stronger or much weaker than you.)

Fans rejoice: You can choose to step into the comfortable sandals of Crixus or Spartacus - or, if you'd prefer, debut your own fighter tailored to your specifications and tastes.

Developed by Kung Fu Factory, Spartacus Legends doesn't yet have a release date for Xbox Live or PlayStation Network. With third and final season Spartacus: War of the Damned debuting in the U.S. on January 25th, however, we're guessing it's not too far off.
