New generation: Pokémon X and Y coming to 3DS

The time has come. The next generation of Pokémon has evolved, with Nintendo revealing what will be two of the most eagerly-anticipated games of 2013: Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, coming exclusively to 3DS this October. Expect new pocket monsters, a new 3D world and some pretty nifty-lookin' dynamic battles.

Tsunekazu Ishihara, CEO of The Pokémon Company explains:

The worldwide launch of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y this October allows players to begin their adventures at the same time. Now, Pokémon fans across the globe can discover the secrets of Pokémon games and can collect, battle, and trade with each other immediately.

The game's in development, as usual, at Game Freak, where video game director Junichi Masuda is a little bit pleased:

We brought Pokémon into an entirely new dimension and we’re incredibly excited to bring Pokémon X and Pokémon Y to fans. The stunning visuals, a completely redesigned environment, game scenario, music, and communication features will bring smiles to the faces of video game players around the world.

Importantly, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y will introduce three new starter Pokémon: Froakie, Fennekin and Chespin, representing water, fire and grass types. There are still plenty of other pocket monsters to discover, as well as various creatures from previous titles in the series.

...and of course, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y will not just be a pair of 3DS games. You can expect to see the franchise making all-new advances on the worlds of animation, trading card games and toys, debuting around the world in 2013.

hi im an 11 year old and yes that is a real email addres

and im telling you this years new pokemon series will be awesome though they have changed some.. ALOT of things they could have changed the starter type into like dark, ghost, fighting or maybe add new types like light

even though they didn’t do that i can tell this will be an awesome game
but i feel bad for the ppl who dont have a 3ds and really want the game

      Hi Aaron!

Thank you for your comment – this year’s new Pokemon series does look pretty exciting, I’m glad you’re looking forward to it!

I do wonder how dark, ghost and fighting types would work in the game against the current types – it could get a bit complicated!

Are you lucky enough to have a 3DS? I think it’s one gadget that will be on a lot of wishlists after this news :)

This looks interesting. I have to wonder, though: how will the dynamics change? It would seem that there won’t be a situation similar to BW (that is, we’ll have old pokemon mixed with the new), but what else will there be? Will there be opportunities to visit old regions (one of the things I loved about Gen II)? How will the dynamics of battle change (admit it: if you’re a veteran, the mechanics are getting a bit stale)? As a twenty-something who STILL thinks the games are cool, this is simultaneously a time for optimism and dread. Also, I need to start saving up for a 3DS.
