Sony ends worldwide PlayStation 2 production

We knew this day was coming, but hoped it wouldn't be so soon. Following the sad news out of Japan last week, Sony has now confirmed it has ceased production of the PlayStation 2 console in all territories. This is, finally, the end of the line for the best-selling home console of all time.

The PS2 has had a good innings, which stretched out for nearly 13 years. In that time, it amassed a library of more than 10,000 games, more than 1.5 billion software sales, and more than 150 million consoles sold across the world.

It was launched alongside the original Xbox and the Sega DreamCast, and has proven to be the longest-lived of the lot.

The news comes via an unexpected source - UK newspaper The Guardian has confirmed the details, observing that Sony may have helped streamline the introduction of DVD technology by choosing to include a player in the games console.

Now though, if you'd been hoping to pick up a brand new PlayStation 2 console, you'd better act fast.

Alternatively, you could wait a while and save your pennies for the fabled PlayStation 4, reportedly codenamed Orbis and expected to be announced later this year.

Thanks, Johnny!
