Torchlight 2 sells a million in 2012

It was officially a pretty good 2012 for Runic Games, who has confirmed that Torchlight 2 sold more than a million copies in a year where the world was crying out for a decent hack 'n' slash action/RPG.

Torchlight 2 was a quiet release, independently developed, self-published and digital download only. It's not surprising the developers are a bit proud, gloating on Twitter:

We had an amazing 2012, and proud to say that #Torchlight2 has sold over 1 million units!

Of course, there was the other Big Name action/RPG that was released in 2012, and while Diablo III sold more than 10 million units, we'd wager Blizzard spent far more than 10 times Runic's budget.

It's also fair to say that Torchlight 2 enjoyed a happier, more satisfying launch. Some would argue that Diablo's launch woes actually drove eager gamers into the waiting arms of Torchlight 2, which was timed to offer alternatives to the crazy click-fest.

Add to that the fact that, at US$20, Torchlight 2 costs a fraction of Diablo III's asking price, and you've got yourself a bargain. Congratulations, Runic!
