Do the milkshake the milkshake do the shake

[GCAP12] Interview: Chris Avellone, Obsidian

You'd never guess that Chris Avellone once held dreams of becoming an architect. These days, he's Creative Director and co-owner of Obsidian Entertainment, and hard at work on two very different (yet, rather similar) projects. We caught up with him at Game Connect Asia Pacific earlier this year and asked him about Project Eternity, Wasteland 2, and why the formerly triple-A developer has reverted to this crowd-funded business model.

Chris has been in the games industry for nearly 20 years, and his design master class was one of the stand-out highlights of GCAP 2012.

Since our interview, Avellone has found himself dragged into the headlines, as Planescape: Torment co-creator Colin McComb expressed plans for creating a "spiritual successor" to the game. The pair have been working recently on Wasteland 2, and McComb feels its time to "circle back" to his roots.

Unsurprisingly, it didn't take much persuading for Avellone to give McComb his blessing to proceed on a new Planescape - without him - and while any details are being kept tightly under wraps, it looks like the game is happening.

Development on Wasteland 2 continues unabated, with inXile officially crowd-sourcing images, artwork and assets for the game - if you want to get your 3D model in the game, now's your chance!

Project Eternity is also making massive progress, with the latest update covering all sorts of details on how the game's design is being fine-tuned.

Wasteland 2 has a tentative release date of October 2013, according to Kickstarter, Project Eternity will follow in April 2014, and the new Planescape is probably even further away.

Obsidian is also currently working on South Park: The Stick of Truth for THQ, due out next year.

  2. Brian says:

Decent interview but please please please, lose the lip ring. Very unprofessional. Like showing up in sweats.

    • Are says:

That’s the stupidest thing I’ve read in a while.

    • Rabid says:

Dude, who give a shit. Back to the 50’s with you. Everything was much more “professional” then. Professionalism is an attitude and work ethic, not a dress code.

    • James says:

_Actual_ professionals can do whatever they want. The supposed appearance of professionalism is subjective malarky only the unqualified worship.

Just imagine if she also had – a tattoo – oh the horrors! Look around, its 2013.

  3. Kingsley Foreman says:

hehehe well dressed, well presented, well spoken and all you can focus on is a lip ring. :).

When it comes down to it, tell me how is it any different to earrings?

  4. Yaz says:

Because you don’t normally look at someone’s ears when they’re speaking? Nor do the ears tend to move that much? :)

Didn’t bother me though, I was here for the audio/info. Good interview, thanks!
