During a press conference held at the Blizzard World Championships this year in Shangai, China, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime confirmed that the hugely popular BlizzCon will be making a return in 2013.
There's some challenges just with all of these tournaments going on, as a spectator, not knowing what to watch or what the significance is of winning this event or that event. Having pro players put in a position where they have to choose between two important events - those are some of the things we'd really like to avoid in 2013. We'd like better coordination and cooperation between partners.
Morhaime explained that although Blizzard doesn't tend to put huge amounts of money into eSports prize pools, they instead invest in the travel and lodging for the pros and those putting on eSports events--which they believe is much more helpful for the industry.
Though this year the Global Finals of the Battle.net World Championship Series were held in Shangai, Morhaime has confirmed that in 2013 they will be held during BlizzCon 2013, which will be back after it was cancelled this year due to Blizzard's "jam-packed" release schedule for StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria and Diablo III.
