The industry's most (in)famous hype expert Peter Molyneux, working with his new company 22Cans, last week released their first of 22 experimental "games"-- Curiosity. The game (which is, tellingly, actually filed in the Entertainment category) is based on a very simple concept: there is a cube made of of layers of millions of interlocking tiles. Tapping on a tile removes it, allowing you to create pictures or write words visible to the rest of the world. The aim of the game is to remove all of the tiles, and reach the center of the cube, where a "life-changing secret" will be revealed. The catch? Only one player will ever see it, and it will be up to them whether to keep it to themselves or share it with the world.
But alas, for PC owners, Molyneux has revealed in an interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun that they are currently "snowed under" with people tapping away at the cube, and their servers couldn't handle the strain of PC users as well.
We would love to do a PC version, but we are currently snowed under by the number of people using the Curiosity experiment (coming up to one million) in a few days. This is pushing our servers to the limit. We are currently all surviving on less than three hours sleep a night. I guess if we could find a publisher who could take on the work of a PC version we could consider it.
It's certainly a curiousity, that's for sure, and it will be interesting to see just how curious people get--you can purchase upgrades that allow you to tap out more blocks at once, including a "diamond chisel" that will increase your tapping power 100,000x times. The price? A mere US$77,000. Get on it, people!
