Kirby is, apparently, a large pink marshmallow. But you can't do cool things with marshmallows, so Nintendo turned to another sweet treat when it came time to celebrate the character's 20th birthday. On September 1st, more than 500 PAX attendees blew chewing gum bubbles, setting a new Guinness World Record achievement in the process.
That's 536 Kirby fans blowing bubbles "that resemble the round, pink Kirby" in an effort coordinated by Nintendo of America. It's been recognised by Guinness as the most people blowing a chewing gum bubble simultaneously - a world record!
Scott Moffitt is executive vice president of Sales + Marketing at Nintendo of America:
Kirby is no ordinary character, so it’s not a surprise that his fans would go to extraordinary lengths to mark his 20th anniversary. Nintendo is proud to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic following. Between this new world record and the upcoming launch of Kirby’s Dream Collection: Special Edition, it’s turning out to be one heck of an anniversary party.
The full package launches in North America on September 16th - six Kirby games on one disk, a commemorative booklet, a music cd and an interactive timeline to give you a little extra insight into Kirby's "colourful" history. The little dude's been in 22 games since 1992!
Commiserations to gum-chewers who attended Kirkwood Community College in Iowa on October 27th, 2010 - they only managed 304 simultaneous chewing gum bubbles, a record now smashed by Kirby fans.
I like video games and music and cups of tea and noodles and beagles and colour-cycling LEDs.
