Sony updates Vita compatible PSone Classics list

As part of the whole cross-compatibility thing, Sony has been working to make a bunch of oldschool PS1 games playable on the handheld PlayStation Vita, via Firmware 1.80. The first batch are out today, and there's a slight difference between those available for North America and the ones published in Europe.

Don Mesa, Director, Handheld Consoles Product Planning and Platform Software Innovation at SCEA explains:

We are working hard to ensure that all of your favorite PS one Classics titles will be available for download directly on your PS Vita via PlayStation Store (PS Store) as soon as possible.

The story goes: If you've already purchased these games, you'll be able to re-download them directly from your PS Store account, or transfer them from your PS3 to your Vita without paying a cent.

...but perhaps Americans aren't so fond of PS1 Classic titles, as they're only receiving nine games:

  • Arc the Lad
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • FINAL FANTASY VII
  • Hot Shots Golf 2
  • Jet Moto
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tomb Raider
  • Twisted Metal 2
  • Wild Arms

Some gamers read as far as Final Fantasy VII, wet their pants, and didn't care about the rest. For people who are fans of things other than JRPGs, the list is a little disappointing.

It gets even more painful when you take a look at the list of games European audiences are receiving with the same 1.80 firmware update:

The news from Sony is that the North American update is just the first instalment, but local gamers are less-than-thrilled.

If you live outside of both the United States and Europe, the situation is potentially worse, because we're not entirely sure just what you'll be getting. Stay by your consoles and check out firmware update 1.80 - hopefully the Sony fairies are generous.
