There were already some big names associated with NBA 2K13, but today's announcement from 2K Sports throws a few more icons into the mix. Not only will the upcoming game feature the entire 2012 USA Men's National Basketball team, but also the "Dream Team", the 1992 USA men's Olympic basketball team.
That's the 1992 team as they appear in NBA 2K13, L-R: Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Clyde Drexler, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Christian Laettner, Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, David Robinson and John Stockton.
Scottie Pippen, despite being a member of the Dream Team, does not appear in NBA 2K13 in any form. 2K Sports explains that despite having a "very positive relationship with Scottie", the publisher was unable to include him this year "for a variety of reasons". Hopefully the specific mention of "this year" bodes well for the future...
While still arguably in the shadow of the players 20 years earlier, the 2012 USA Men's National Team is considered one of USA Basketball's all-time greatest teams. NBA 2K13 cover athlete Kevin Durant is a member of the 2012 team, something he describes as "an incredible blessing".
USA Basketball's National Team legacy is incredible and so many of basketball's all-time greats have been part of it, I'm just honored to be in that group. Like everybody, I can't wait to see how our squad stacks up against the 1992 team in NBA 2K13.
Durant's teammate Kobe Bryant scoffed earlier this year, claiming that the 2012 Olympic team would win in a match against their 1992 predecessors. Charles Barkley "just started laughing" in response. While it's impossible to match the two teams up in their heyday (Larry Bird has admitted that the young men would probably win, as many of the Dream Team haven't played in 20 years), NBA 2K13 at least gives us the opportunity to see how things might have played out.
I like video games, fishing, Depeche Mode, long walks on the beach, writing discussion papers and cups of tea. Not necessarily in that order.
