Epic Games fully acquires Bulletstorm developer

Epic Games has officially acquired the rest of People Can Fly, the Polish development studio behind Bulletstorm and Painkiller. The news follows founder Adrian Chmielarz and two key art staff announcing their departure from the company over the weekend.

The news sheds some light on the trio's sudden decision. Chmielarz, Andrzej Poznanski and Michal Kosieradzki left People Can Fly following Epic announcing its intention to buy out the company last week. Epic vice president Mark Rein explains to Polygon that the resignations were "amiable", and the acquisition was "something we always hoped to do".

We will be helping (Chmielarz) with some future announcements - our paths will be crossing again.

Epic tends to maintain a more-than-civil relationship with former employees, supporting independent developers and standalone projects (for a recent example, see Lili!).

People Can Fly originally approached Epic back in the day, asking to license the company's Unreal Engine for one of their games. Rein and Epic apparently liked what they saw.

In the years since, People Can Fly has worked on elements of all three Gears of War games, a relationship which culminated in the announcement that the Polish developer would take on sole duties on the upcoming Gears of War: Judgment.

Rein promises that the buyout - and the departure of key staff - will not impact Judgment's development.

People Can Fly joins Epic Japan, Epic Korea, ChAIR Entertainment and the freshly-announced Impossible Studios as Epic's five wholly-owned subsidiaries.
