What do you do when you're known as the world's leading destination for PC and Mac games? You branch out, and start making moves towards becoming the world's leading destination for other stuff, too. At least, that's what Valve thinks, with the announcement of the first set of new software coming to the Steam digital platform.
Ranging from productivity to creativity, the Steam software launch titles are designed to work with the Steamworks features we know and love from the games. Expect easy installation, automatic updating, and Steam Cloud functionality so you can save your work online and take your files with you.
Mark Richardson at Valve explains the decision came from the crowd:
The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games. They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests.
Software on Steam is all set to kick off on September 5th, and Valve is not just keeping things to the Big Names. Developers of all shapes and sizes are invited to submit their works via Steam Greenlight. Who knows just what will start showing up...
I like video games and music and cups of tea and noodles and beagles and colour-cycling LEDs.
