There are perks to pre-purchasing, too: Early-bird customers will get a 10% discount on the game, plus snag early access to the beta, kicking off August 14th - a whole week before official launch of CS:GO.
...but wait: What actually is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive?
It's an online shooter - both first and third person - which promises to "expand on the classic team-based action gameplay" that we fell in love with when the original Counter-Strike launched way back in 2000.
The game itself is packed with more than 45 weapons, new game modes, new visuals, "loads of maps" (including updated Counter-Strike content like de_dust!), leaderboards and more than 165 Steam Achievements, if you're into that sort of thing.
Doug Lombardi at Valve explains:
Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999. For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.
If you're not familiar with the Counter-Strike franchise (of which CS:GO is the fourth), then perhaps you might like to peruse this week's Steam sales: Midweek Madness is focussing on the games this week, from August 7-9.
