Divekick signs to publisher, drops crowdfunding

The world is - largely - sick of crowd-funding news, but today we have a Kickstarter update with a twist: An indie developer who has just cancelled its campaign, despite reaching the funding goal.

Up until yesterday, One True Game Studios was running a rather successful campaign to raise funds for a fighting game - Divekick - which only required two buttons. No joystick, no gamepad, no additional controllers. Just a jump, and a kick.

Seriously: Two buttons.

The idea took off, and the studio raised more than $32,500 of its $30,000 goal by the time the campaign was scheduled to end. However, the developer changed its mind, cancelling the fundraiser with just one day on the clock.

...and the rationale behind it is truly admirable, as the studio explains in an update:

The spirit of Kickstarter is as a creative “last resort,” if there is no way to get your game funded, hit up Kickstarter to see if there’s enough community interest in funding it. Well, we are happy to inform you today that we've made a deal with a publisher to help us both finish and release Divekick to the masses! The finished game will be loaded with features and characters, and we are sure you'll be pleased with the result.

So! If you were one of the 800+ backers interested in Divekick, you certainly won't miss out on the game. You also won't miss out on your money, with Kickstarter refunding every cent. And, icing on the indie cake? You won't miss out on some other cool stuff either: Even though the team apologises that it "cannot honour game pre-orders or mail out T-shirts" without taking anyone's money, there are still a number of bonuses available to the early adopters who showed faith in the pitch.

For more information, head to the Bring Divekick to PC Kickstarter page and read up - and for more on the progress of the actual game, pop over to One True Game's official website.
