Welcome to Player Attack!
Is the world ready for another game based on the Slender Man mythos? One indie developer thinks we are - and is preparing Slender: Source, a new take on the storyline created as a mod for Half-Life 2. The difference between this one and others currently doing the rounds? Multiplayer.
You may be curious as to what 'Slender: Source' is all about, and to simply put it bluntly, it's gonna be scary. Slender: Source is based off of the legend of the Slenderman which is a mythical creature often depicted as a tall, thin figure wearing a black suit and a blank face.
But do gamers really want to be scared when playing with their friends? Can a multiplayer experience even be as spooky as one where you are left alone in the middle of a forest? The developers are curious, and acknowledge that there are some gamers who'd prefer Slender: Source to be a solitary affair.
We've seen some people explain that they think the addition of multiplayer may take away from the horror experience that was well known with the Slender game on Unity, since you won't be alone but with friends. We currently have the game set at 4 player limits, but we've been discussing lowering it to around 2 players. This is still up for discussion, and we'll constantly be thinking about how we're going to work around this.
The concept of the game is simple: Wander around a forest, collecting creepy porcelain dolls while avoiding the Slender Man (are these dolls simply generic figures, or are they the Slender Man's earlier victims?). The addition of a quest means that you won't simply be able to hide behind a tree and wait for him to appear - instead, you'll be forced to explore, find hiding spots and prepare yourself better. Stay in a group though, he likes to target people wandering alone.
Inspired by the recent Unity release of Slender by Parsec Productions, Slender: Source is incorporating a few different ideas - including an additional gameplay mode the developers are keeping very quiet until the game hits shelves.
...did we mention that while you're searching for the dolls, you won't have any weapons or any way to defend yourself?
Designed to ship with two maps (the original forest plus an abandoned hospital - and each enviroment poses its own risks, watch your step!), Slender: Source is still in the earliest stages of development, due for release in February/March 2013.
I like video games and music and cups of tea and noodles and beagles and colour-cycling LEDs.
