BitMonster Games is a brand new independent game developer based in North Carolina. Its first game is an adventure RPG hybrid named Lili, headed exclusively to iOS devices. Lili uses Unreal Engine 3 technology - something BitMonster president Lee Perry should be very familiar with.
Perry - and the other five members of the BitMonster team - are all former Epic Games employees. Perry worked as senior gameplay designer for Gears of War, and more recently as Lead Designer for Fortnite (meaning he should also be well-versed in Unreal Engine 4).
As he explains:
Epic has been extremely supportive of our new studio and in helping us build the game of our dreams. We set out to create an adventure that is appropriate for nearly anyone. As a designer, it’s exciting to see that the Unreal Engine 3 tools are better than ever, and they provide everything we need to achieve a gratifying and imaginative experience.
Other staff members have worked with Epic on - well, just about everything: All three Gears of War titles, an assortment of Unreal Tournaments and Infinity Blade: Dungeons. There are also experienced developers and designers from Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Medal of Honor: Airborne, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, American McGee's Alice and Ubisoft's Ghost Recon franchise.
BitMonster is set to deliver the triple-A production values that appeal to discerning players. Given this team’s crazy mix of passion, talent and chemistry, and with the latest Unreal Engine tools in their hands, BitMonster has a winning recipe for success.
But enough about the developer! What about the game?
Title character Lili finds herself on the mysterious and beautiful island of Geos, already inhabited by "a number of crazy folk" and an oppressive regime or two. Through her adventures, Lili uses her own non-combat system to solve problems and deal with enemies, and BitMonster suggests that she may work out a few personal issues while she's at it.
And while this is the first we've heard of Lili (and BitMonster!), it won't be long before we get to check out the game properly. Currently in the final steps of production, we're told to keep an eye on the App Store - Lili should be there in just a few weeks.
I like video games, fishing, Depeche Mode, long walks on the beach, writing discussion papers and cups of tea. Not necessarily in that order.
