NVIDIA in damage control after forum hack

Hardware company NVIDIA has shut down its official forums, following reports that user details have been accessed by unauthorised third parties. The company first noted "suspicious activity" on its websites last week, prompting an immediate suspension of services.

Now, it has been confirmed that while the hackers were active, they were able to access email addresses, usernames, profile information and hashed passwords with random salt value. No passwords had been stored in plain-text, but NVIDIA is refusing to comment on how many may have been accessed. The company also explains that much of the information that has been taken (including birth date, age, gender, locations, interests, URL and email addresses) has always been opt-in publicly accessible.

No credit card details were touched

In an official statement, NVIDIA apologises for the delay, and explains that the company is employing additional security measures in an effort to minimise the impact of future attacks.

All user passwords for our forums will be reset when the system comes back online. At that time, an email with a temporary password, along with instructions on how to change it, will be sent to your registered email address.

As a precautionary measure, we strongly recommend that you change any identical passwords that you may be using elsewhere.

At this stage, nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack, however it is believed to be connected to a series of high-profile forum attacks which also affected Formspring and Android news site Phandroid.
