Alien Arena: Free-to-play Linux shooter, reloaded

Free-to-play Linux shooter Alien Arena has been revamped, revitalised, reloaded and - most excitingly - released! Getting the important stuff out of the way first, we have the full, standalone clients for both Linux and Windows PC, as well as all the details on just what has been updated for this shiny new edition.

Download Alien Arena 7.60 for Linux or Alien Arena 7.60 for Windows depending on your preferred system, and check out this new trailer while you wait:

Alien Arena has been around since 2004, when it first combined a 1950s sci-fi aesthetic (Mars Attacks, we're lookin' at you) with a gameplay style similar to Unreal Tournament and Quake. In 2012, we're seeing some major changes come to the Arena - an improved engine and code, new weapons, and gameplay has received a significant spit-polish.

What's in store? Check out the list:

  • Many new rendering features
  • Twelve new/rebuilt levels
  • Two new player characters, the Overlord and Warrior
  • Brand new "super" weapon, the Minderaser
  • Improved antilag code
  • "Simple" items rendering option
  • Improved and expanded movement
  • Improved Bot AI, particulary with CTF
  • New music, and music "shifts" in game situations
  • Variety of bug fixes and code cleansing
  • Head to the official website for the full v7.60 changelog!

Alien Arena: Reloaded

Developer John "Irritant" Diamond explains:

Alien Arena is a freeware deathmatch game that has been around for some time, and steadily evolved into what we feel is a leader among a crowded fps field. With it's smooth gameplay, balanced weapons, and rich, immersive arenas, the game is an artisticly cohesive tour de force in the genre. Alien Arena is free to download, free to play, and the code is open sourced, and that will never change.

With that level of dedication from both the devleopment team and the game's adoring fans, it's no surprise that Alien Arena has continued to grow and thrive in a modding scene that seems to claim more victims than heroes.

C'mon then! Alien Arena! Grab it for Linux! Grab it for Windows! Hop to it! The price is right, what have you got to lose?
