Insomniac Games is best known for the flashy explosions and mean-lookin' bad guys of the Resistance series, as well as the cute cartoony style of Ratchet & Clank. Now though, the developer is taking a somewhat different approach to one of its upcoming games: Outernauts is a sci-fi social adventure, designed exclusively for Facebook.
You become a member of the Outernauts, an elite intergalactic force that has been given the unenviable task of capturing, then training, aliens which live throughout the galaxy.
Ted Price, Insomniac founder, explains:
We see a huge opportunity to reach an entirely different audience of gamers through Facebook.
As we have demonstrated for nearly twenty years in the console games space, we're confident we can help evolve the definition of a game experience on Facebook. With Outernauts, we are delivering a deep story with real RPG strategy, coupled with Insomniac's signature sense of humour.
The game has already been compared to "Pokémon in outer space", with the ability to either team up with friends or battle it out against them, in intriguing, asynchronous turn-based battles.
Outernauts is currently in closed beta testing, expected to launch on the social network a little later this year.
I like video games and music and cups of tea and noodles and beagles and colour-cycling LEDs.
