It's official: Nintendo really is working on Super Mario 4. Unfortunately, that's about all we know about the project, with Shigeru Miyamoto remaining pretty tight-lipped after making the big reveal.
Rather than shutting down the rumours, the confirmation may in fact spark more, as gamers check their wishlists. Could this be the Super Mario title for Wii U that we've been promised will be shown off at E3 this year? Is it the 2D Mario game for the 3DS that Nintendo was talking about last year?
Fans of the series are also a little confused - the similarly-titled Super Mario Bros 4 technically already exists, as a Japanese subtitle for Super Mario World. Retro Gaming Aus observes that Super Mario 3D Land is based on Super Mario Bros 3, so it will be interesting to see whether Super Mario 4 has a "similar relationship" with Super Mario World.
I like video games, fishing, Depeche Mode, long walks on the beach, writing discussion papers and cups of tea. Not necessarily in that order.
