Second-hand DS leads to priest’s child porn arrest

Forgetting to format the memory in his Nintendo DS before selling it has landed a Catholic priest in trouble with the law. Late last year, the new owner of the handheld discovered it contained digital images of nude boys, many underage.

The story came to light in October last year, when a woman called the local authorities to report inappropriate photographs stored on the DS console she had recently purchased second hand from the priest.

After being questioned by the Flathead County Sheriff's Office, Rudolph "Rudy" Carl Bullman shamefacedly admitted that he did, on occasion, visit gay pornographic websites on both his computer and the DS handheld - but claimed he only looked at sites which stated the subjects of the photos were over the age of 18.

"Well, those aren't adults," Bullman is alleged to have observed after allowing a detective to browse his home computer. According to court documents, that search revealed multiple images of young males aged between 12 and 18, "displaying their genitals" or otherwise engaged in sexual acts.

Bullman denied searching explicitly for child pornography, but that images would occasionally appear on his computer while searching other websites.

The Montana Division of Criminal Investigations uncovered 23 images of child pornography in Bullman's internet cache - and agents found a further 23 images in a file containing deleted JPGs.

Jeanne Parker, a Montana detective, has determined that the images - based on her experience - are sexually explicit depictions of children under the age of 16.

Bullman entered the priesthood twelve years ago, and had been working at Risen Christ Parish in Kalispell, Montana until he was placed on administrative leave from the church in December 2011, when the Roman Catholic Diocese learned of the police investigation into his activities. At the time, he was also asked to vacate the parish residence, and has no involvement with the ministry since the allegations surfaced. Bullman has also been receiving counselling, with the Diocese "cooperating fully" with the investigation.

The Missoulian reports that Bullman faces a maximum 10 years in prison and a fine of up to US$10,000 if convicted.

Wouldn’t this have been a DSi or newer model? I don’t recall normal DS or DS lite consoles being able to use SD cards. I know you could get the internet with a special cartridge but that’s about it.
